What is a Doula?
A doula is a woman (and occasionally a man) who gives her undivided attention and support to a woman in labor. She provides physical, mental and emotional comfort measures. Her support allows the laboring woman to delve into the sensations of labor and childbirth without fear and with confidence. A doula also supports the woman's partner to participate in the way only a partner can, with their unique love and devotion. She is trained in a myriad of comfort measures and can coach a partner if need be. Doulas do not provide any clinical assessments such as dilation, nor do they monitor aspects of labor such as fetal heart tones.
A to Z Doula Collective is a growing community of birth professionals committed to helping women and their families find the right services for their pregnancy, labor and postpartum needs. Currently, the Collective includes birth doulas and artists, and can provide recommendations for midwives, maternity/birth/newborn photographers, placenta encapsulation professionals, childbirth educators and many other related services.
